Escaping Pets & Other Crazy Realtor Stories

Craziness in a Realtor’s life doesn’t always come from the market!

You might think that the real estate market is wild and crazy, but today I’m here to share a few scary (and also funny) stories from my life as a Realtor. Dealing with the market is only one aspect of our job; sometimes we have to deal with wild and crazy people—even their pets!

"I was previewing a vacant house for a client when I went out to my car to retrieve something, only to find that I had fleas all over my legs!"

For instance, I was once locked out on the deck with my clients! The door had automatically locked behind us; there were no stairs or other ways to get down, so we had to come home, open the door, and get us back inside. Now I try to never go out on the deck with the door closed.

In another case, a friend of mine showed a vacant property to her client. Unbeknownst to her, the client had kept her business card. Some time later, my friend got a call from the FBI, who wanted to know how she knew the man. She found out her client had been using the vacant house for mailing checks and committing fraud! That was a scary experience, but in the end, they caught him, and it all worked out for the best.

Setting off an alarm in a home has, unfortunately, happened to me more than once. One of these times, I couldn’t find the alarm pad to turn it off, and as I was racing around the house to find it, I hit a rug in the hallway, tripped, and face-planted. I had to pick myself up and try to act like I was cool for my clients, even as the alarm kept blaring and the police arrived. It was hard to keep my composure as all of that went down, but fortunately, the police were understanding and nothing truly bad came of it.

As I mentioned, pets are a big category for Realtors. Everyone is passionate about their pets, though they can provide their share of challenges to us in the trade. One of the most awful things that happened to me involving pets happened back in the day when wearing off-white stockings was en vogue. I was previewing a vacant house for a client when I went out to my car to retrieve something, only to find that I had fleas all over my legs! I called the agent to ask if she knew the house had fleas; she told me that hadn’t been to the property in over a week. For fleas to become that much of an issue, it had to have been a lot longer than a week!

Hopefully some of these stories gave you a good laugh. If you have any questions about real estate or have some fun stories of your own to share, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’d love to speak with you!
